Overview | SONCAP The Federal Government of Nigeria implemented a new policy to control the export of unqualified unsafe products to the country. SONCAP is effective from September 1, 2005. SONCAP stands for Standards Organization of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Programme. SONCAP is a set of regulatory products and conformity assessment and certification procedures that apply to imports into Nigeria. The above controlled products must arrive prior to shipment or comply with Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) regulations and/or other approved international approvals. The purpose of implementing SONCAP is to protect Nigerian consumers from damage caused by unsafe and/or defective products. Most of the unqualified insecure products mentioned above are imported goods and are directly sold to consumers. The goal of implementing SONCAP is to ensure that regulatory products meet the relevant requirements of acceptable standards, and that relevant government agencies that have regulatory responsibility for product quality manage the controlled products. |
